Twice a year at the Texas Mile, some of the country’s fastest cars gather at Chase Field in Beeville, Texas to see how fast they can go in a standing mile. The fastest vehicle at the March 2012 event was our friend’s camo wrapped Ford GT, that went 257.7 mph.

We took another trip to the ultimate one-mile challenge – the Texas Mile. The May 2011 event was a big deal for the Texas Mile, it was the inaugural running at their new home located at Chase Field Naval Air Station in Beeville, Texas and the first ever running of the Texas Mile in May. For those who do not know, the Texas Mile is an event that allows drivers to see how fast their vehicle can go in a standing mile, and until May 2011 it has always been held at the Goliad Industrial Airpark in Goliad, Texas.
The May event was also a big deal for Autospotters because we became too large to fit the crew and gear, comfortably, into one car – so for the first time ever, we took two cars. Not just any two cars, but a 2012 Ford Mustang GT convertible and a 2011 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Hybrid. The fact that both vehicles have four wheels and took us to the Texas Mile is about where any comparison ends.

With every car we review, we put a set of golf clubs in the trunk to: 1) test fit a set of golf clubs, and 2) go play golf. Strangely enough, on our way to the golf course with some of the more exciting cars, we have been known to accidently miss a turn, accidently miss another turn or two and find ourselves taking the on ramp to a nearby five-lane highway. However, this particular Friday afternoon there was no point in even test fitting a set of clubs – I had the keys to a 2011 Shelby GT500. No car with a Shelby badge should be parked in a country club parking lot while the driver chases a little white ball around a field for a few hours.
Additionally, this was March 26, 2011, and if you are a speed freak or like amazing cars, there was only one place in the country to be – Goliad, Texas. This little town, with a population of less than 8,000 and rich in Texas history, has been the host of a bi-annual event called the Texas Mile. For the last seven years, runway 10 at the Goliad Industrial Airpark, a one-time Navy training facility, has been the location where anyone crazy enough could run their vehicle flat-out to see how fast it could go in a standing mile.
