The Lexus LS has never been an attention grabbing car. Since its introduction, almost two decades ago, the LS has established its niche as a big, luxury, four-door, with emphasis on comfort and technology rather than performance or style. The introduction of the 4th generation LS stays true to form, however now, thanks to an all new F-sport package, performance and style are emphasized just as much as those other things.

We recently drove the 2013 Lexus LS F-sport for a week and logged over 1,000 miles. It was better than we expected, but not everything we wanted. What we truly wanted was BMW M or Mercedes-Benz AMG power. What we got was no slouch, but the 386-horsepower produced by the naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 cannot be compared to the aforementioned German hotrods and their forced induction V8’s that make north of 500-horsepower.

Our wants and Lexus’ intentions are two different things. Lexus intended to create a better looking, better handling LS that would make the driving experience more entertaining and draw younger buyers to the mark. Have they succeeded? Yes, yes and we’ll soon know.

The F-sport package enhances appearance by way of a more aggressive front end with a blacked out mesh spindle shaped grille and larger air intakes. The addition of gray with black accent 19-inch forged wheels, a slightly lower stance and rear bumper diffuser complete the exterior upgrade. F-sport enhancements are carried through to the interior by way of sportier front seats that provide far greater lateral support than those found in the standard LS models and a leather wrapped sport steering wheel with paddle shifters. Additionally, F-sport badging, embroidering and embossing throughout will tip off passengers that this is not a big boring Lexus.

Rather than additional horsepower, the LS F-sport gains performance points by way of handling. Upgrades include six-piston Brembo brakes, a Torsion limited-slip rear differential and adjustable air suspension. Furthermore, the 2013 LS F-sport has five driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport S+; each of which makes various adjustments to the car’s ride, performance and handling characteristics. While Eco or perhaps Comfort may be of interest to some, it was Sport S+ that we found most interesting and entertaining. Turning the mode selection knob to Sport S+ does more than turn the gauge cluster red and display a cool graphic on the 12.3-inch jumbotron in the center of the dashboard; it also stiffens the suspension, tightens the steering and firms and adjusts shift points. These minor sounding changes make a major difference in the feel and handling and even make it not too laughable of an idea to utter the words “track” and “Lexus LS” in the same sentence.

While testing the LS F-sport, we put it through the paces on some of our favorite crooked roads in the Texas Hill Country. These roads have a way of finding weakness in handling and making even small cars feel large. We selected Sport S+ and really pushed the Lexus hard; the 4,400 pound Lexus responded as though it were smaller and much lighter weight. Under normal conditions, leaving the automatic transmission in Drive and letting it work out which of its eight cogs are most suitable would work fine, however, the twists and turns of our Hill Country test roads were not normal conditions. We found that using the paddles, we were able to eliminate what felt like constant gear changes followed by second guessed changes. Save for the shift happy 8-speed transmission and a hood that noticeably fluttered at high-speed, we discovered no weaknesses in the 2013 Lexus LS F-sport’s ability to hustle the hill country roads.

Interior quality is as to be expected from a Lexus LS. All materials are of high quality, the leather is soft and beautifully stitched, trim is fit and finished perfectly and all of the buttons and knobs provide positive and solid feedback.

The mouse like control of the Lexus infotainment system is easy to operate and makes the seemingly endless menus and screens simple to navigate quickly, when parked. Although it is simple and efficient, navigating menus with a pointer does require a considerable amount of eyes-off-the-road-time; for this reason, Lexus has also included a few traditional buttons for the most common operations such as audio and climate control. With useful apps like Bing and Yelp and appreciated apps like Pandora and iHeartRadio, the 2013 Lexus LS is one of the most connected cars we have driven. With safety systems like Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane-Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and automatic high beam assist, the 2013 Lexus LS is also one of the safest cars we have driven.

The 2013 Lexus LS F-sport is also offered in an all-wheel drive version. Horsepower of the AWD LS F-sport is reduced to 360 because of the need to reroute the exhaust around the added gizmos that power the front wheels. This results in a more restrictive exhaust flow – thus less power. We think the fun of the LS F-sport is its ability to hang the tail out around turns and lay long stretches of rubber through intersections (in a responsible manner of course), and the ability to do either would be eliminated by AWD. Opting for AWD reduces horsepower, reduces fun and slightly reduces MPG’s to 16/23 from 16/24 – none of which we are fans of.

We clocked 0-60 mph runs in the mid 5-second range and ¼-mile blasts in the low 13’s. The smooth ride and very quiet cabin reduces most of the driver’s sensation of speed, which could add to the challenge of maintaining recommended speeds, but is a welcomed tradeoff for long-distance driving.

The 2013 Lexus LS F-sport starts at $81,990 and, in our opinion, is currently one of the best looking sub $100k luxury sedans available.

Beeville, TX. March 22 – 24, 2013.

Another Texas Mile in the books and another record set by the camo wrapped, twin-turbo Ford GT owned by our friend Mark, prepped by the Hennessey team, tuned by Shane and this time driven by Patrick. At the end of a standing mile, the street legal Ford GT had set a new Texas Mile record of 267.6 mph.

Unfortunately the 4th generation black Camaro of KP Racing (aka: The World’s Fastest Camaro) suffered a horrific crash on the 2nd day of the event. The car will not live to race again, but fortunately the driver will.

BRABUS 800 Roadster:
World debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show

The Mercedes SL 65 AMG with 588 kW / 800 hp of power, 1,420 Nm of torque and a top speed of 350 km/h

BRABUS 800 Roadster – based on the Mercedes SL 65 AMG, BRABUS (Brabus-Allee, D-46240 Bottrop, phone + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777-0, fax + 49 / (0) 2041 / 777 111, Internet www.brabus.com) builds the world’s most powerful roadster. The two-seater is powered by a 12-cylinder Biturbo engine uprated by BRABUS T65 RS tuning. It produces 588 kW / 800 hp (788 bhp) of power and a peak torque of 1,420 Nm. A sprint time of 3.7 seconds from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) and of 9.8 seconds to 200 km/h (124 mph) are impressive testaments to the car’s special status that is further bolstered by an electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). The exclusive equipment features also include BRABUS carbon-fiber bodywork components designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, custom-tailored BRABUS wheels with diameters up to 20 inches and exclusive options for the cockpit.

BRABUS T65 RS tuning unleashes the latent power reserves of the six-liter V12 engine. To this end, the BRABUS engine professionals have developed a BRABUS high-tech Biturbo system with custom high-performance manifolds that feature integrated turbine housings and high-performance turbochargers. The tuning also includes four water-to-air intercoolers, housed in space provided by the BRABUS carbon-fiber hood scoop. Another custom development for the SL 65 power upgrade is the special BRABUS stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system. It features free-flow metal catalysts and ceramic-coated tailpipes with distinctive BRABUS design. An integrated butterfly valve in the exhaust provides an active sound management on the steering wheel: at the push of a button the driver can chose between a discrete “coming home” and a markedly sporty exhaust note.

The newly calibrated engine electronics complete with high-performance mapping for injection and ignition coordinate the perfect interaction of the high-end components while also ensuring compliance with EURO V emission standards. The high-tech lubricants for the entire powertrain are supplied by technology partner MOTUL.

The BRABUS T65 RS engine produces 588 kW / 800 hp (788 bhp) of power at 5,500 rpm and an even more impressive peak torque of 1,420 Nm (1,047 lb-ft), available from a low 2,100 rpm. In the car, peak torque is limited electronically to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft).

In conjunction with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission, whose gears can be shifted automatically or manually with the BRABUS aluminum shift paddles on the steering wheel, the BRABUS 800 Roadster rises to the become the most powerful of its kind. From rest the sports car weighing in at about two metric tons (2.2 tons) sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.7 seconds. The two-door car reaches a speed of 200 km/h (124 mph) after just 9.8 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 350 km/h (217 mph).

To master these enormous speeds at all times, a BRABUS aerodynamic-enhancement kit for the SL 65 was developed in the wind tunnel. All components are manufactured from carbon fibers and are available either with a matt or high-gloss surface finish. It goes without saying; they can also be painted in the car’s exterior color.

The BRABUS front spoiler attaches to the lower section of the bumper. It lends the roadster a more sporty appearance and reduces lift on the front axle. BRABUS covers for the side air vents round out the striking front for the SL 65 AMG.

The sides are refined with custom-tailored attachments for the air vents integrated into the front fenders and with rocker panels.

To achieve an optimal aerodynamic balance, the rear section is upgraded with a diffuser insert for the fascia.

As an alternative to the 19-inch stock tires of the SL 65, the BRABUS suspension engineers have developed an exclusive 20-inch high-tech variant. The new BRABUS Monoblock R “Platinum Edition” forged wheel offers the perfect symbiosis of lightweight construction and maximum strength thanks to state-of-the-art manufacturing technology. In addition to the innovative construction, this wheel design also offers unique looks with ten double spokes arranged in two matt titanium and fully polished planes. The front axle is fitted with wheels in size 9Jx20 shod with size 255/30 ZR 20 tires. In the rear, tires in size 305/25 ZR 20 mounted on size 10.5Jx20 wheels transfer the BRABUS 800 Roadster’s power of 800 horses to the asphalt. BRABUS recommends high-performance tires from Continental, Pirelli and YOKOHAMA.

To give the two-seater even more agile handling, BRABUS developed a special control module for the ABC suspension of the SL 65 AMG. It lowers the ride height by about 25 millimeters (1.0 inches).

The BRABUS limited-slip rear differential with a locking rate of 40 percent can enhance handling performance further still.

BRABUS adds even more luxury and custom features to the two-seat interior upon request as well. The product portfolio ranges from scuff plates with backlit BRABUS logo and a speedometer with 360-km/h dial (220 mph) to carbon-fiber and wood trim sets in any color imaginable and with a variety of surface finishes.

The company upholstery shop crafts exquisite BRABUS interiors from especially soft yet durable BRABUS Mastik leather and Alcantara. A prime example for the precision craftsmanship is the leather-clad trunk of the show car at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show that features meticulous and precise honeycomb stitching throughout.

Mercedes-AMG continues to emphasize performance, dynamic purpose and efficiency: The new 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC now features a redesigned, performance-oriented AMG all-wheel-drive system as standard equipment and is also available as an especially powerful SModel with output of 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. The 5.5-liter AMG V8 Biturbo continues to be the benchmark of efficiency: No other competitor in this segment offers this combination of maximum performance and low fuel consumption. Permanent all-wheel drive is standard on all U.S. models – which also feature a power increase from 518 hp to 550 hp with a peak torque of 531 lb-ft. With this step Mercedes-AMG now for the first time offers powerful passenger cars with an all-wheel-drive system designed for vehicle dynamics. The 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC goes on-sale in the U.S. this summer.

With the introduction of the new custom-tailored models, Mercedes-AMG offers its customers even more individuality than before. The 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC is more powerful and sports a more dynamic outfit than all its predecessors: Even at first glance the new AMG design philosophy is immediately apparent. The new “twin blade” radiator grille and a new “A-wing” in the AMG front fascia define the exclusive appearance. As before, the top-of-the-line E-Class AMG model is available as a sedan and wagon. Also adding significantly to the new models’ appeal is the marked improvement in the price-performance ratio: E63 AMG 4MATIC customers now get even more power, better vehicle dynamics and a more extensive list of standard equipment.

The new product logic also benefits the CLS63 AMG: Like the E63 AMG 4MATIC, the CLS63 AMG is available as an S-Model and with the performanceoriented AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC as standard. The addition of the E63 AMG and the CLS63 AMG means there are now also two all-wheel-drive passenger car models available from Mercedes-AMG besides the successful ML63 AMG, GL63 AMG, and G63 AMG SUV’s. Additional models equipped with the performance-oriented AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC such as the CLA45 AMG will follow this year.

Ola Källenius, CEO Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The philosophy of Mercedes-AMG is driving performance. With the new model variants of the E63 AMG 4MATIC and CLS63 AMG 4MATIC it is also becoming clear that we offer our customers even more individuality than before. In particular the S-Models represent the most attractive offer in the competitive segment and score decisive points with a significant improvement in their price-performance ratio: The most power and the highest torque in the segment, the new performance-oriented AMG allwheel- drive system, the new design and a significantly more extensive standard-equipment package are among the outstanding strengths of the new high-performance automobiles from Affalterbach. With the innovative allwheel- drive S-Models we will reach new customers and markets.”

Tobias Moers, head of overall vehicle development and member of the management board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “We have significantly honed the dynamic profile of the 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC and the CLS63 AMG 4MATIC with the exclusive S-Models. Only AMG offers customers power and torque figures of such magnitude. Our AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine is still the world’s most efficient V8 built in series production. With the newly developed performance-oriented AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC we not only deliver the best acceleration figures in the competitive segment, we also offer our customers markedly better vehicle dynamics than ever before.”

* electronically limited;

With an acceleration time of 3.5 seconds for the sprint from rest to 60 mph, the S-Model of the E63 AMG 4MATIC holds an undisputed top position in the competitive environment; the electronically limited top speed is 186 mph. In addition to the power increase, the performance-oriented AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC with a power distribution of 33 to 67 percent (front/rear axle) is also a major factor. Perfect traction during acceleration effectively prevents any losses due to wheel slip.

On the new S-Model the AMG 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine produces a peak power output of 577 hp and delivers a peak torque of 590 lb-ft – an increase by 27 hp over the previously available AMG Performance package option. The increase in performance and power is made possible by modifications to the engine management system, an increase in the peak injection pressure and a hike in maximum boost pressure from 13.0 to 14.5 psi. The base model also adds 32 hp and 15 lb-ft and now produces 550 hp of power and a peak torque of 531 lb-ft.

Despite the added power and improved performance all E63 AMG 4MATIC models deliver high efficiency, low fuel consumption and low emissions. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo engine is still the most efficient series-production V8 engine in its performance segment – and that with significantly more displacement than the direct competitors.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission for a personal setup

Maximum individuality and custom-tailored dynamics are the strengths of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. Four drive programs, “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), provide each driver with a personal setup. In “C” mode the ECO start/stop function is active and shuts off the eight-cylinder engine when the car is at a standstill. In addition, the driver experiences smooth transmission characteristics with comfortable and early gearshifts. In “C” mode the car generally starts in second gear.

In the “S”, “S+” and “M” transmission modes the engine and transmission are significantly more agile and the ECO start/stop function is deactivated. Perfectly tailored to a spirited driving style is the partial suppression of the cylinders. A brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection under open throttle results in even faster gearshifts and a more aggressive exhaust note. An automatic rev-matching function for downshifts and the RACE START function are also part of the standard features of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Performance-oriented all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC for maximum dynamics

The performance-oriented all-wheel-drive system sends 33 percent of the engine torque to the front and 67 percent to the rear axle. The rear-biased torque split ensures the high level of vehicle dynamics typical of AMG and maximum driving pleasure. The three-stage ESP® system is specifically calibrated to the permanent all-wheel-drive system. In “Sport Handling” mode the Torque Vectoring Brake applies the brakes to selected wheels in the interest of supreme agility: As a result, unwelcome understeer is prevented.

During cornering a targeted brief brake intervention on the inside rear wheel affects a defined turn-in of the vehicle.

The standard AMG all-wheel-drive system 4MATIC improves road safety and traction on wet or wintery roads. Optimal traction is ensured by a multi-plate clutch with a locking force of 37 lb-ft, which increases road adhesion particularly on ice and snow.

The technical basis is a transfer case for the additional power take-off to the driven front axle. It is integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with minimum additional space requirements. The torque is transferred by the power take-off to the front axle via a drive shaft. The power from the front differential is transferred to the left half shaft by an intermediate shaft that runs in a sealed shaft tunnel in the engine oil pan. This compact and weight-optimized design results in a comparatively low added weight of just 154 lbs for the all-wheel-drive components.

E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC with limited-slip rear differential

Mercedes-AMG goes even one step further on the E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC. In keeping with its philosophy of “Driving Performance” the most powerful E-Class is equipped with a limited-slip rear differential. This high-tech package increases traction even further. The effect: Even better vehicle dynamics and more driving pleasure, in particular on the racetrack.

All 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC models are equipped with the AMG Adaptive sports suspension with electronically controlled damping system. The front axle features a steel suspension, the rear axle an all-air suspension system. A push of the button with the shock absorber symbol in the AMG DRIVE UNIT is all it takes to switch the electronics from “Comfort” to “Sport” or “Sport plus.” In conjunction with newly developed aluminum axle components this results in significantly more grip and agility while maintaining the vehicle’s neutral handling during fast cornering. The S-Model’s elastokinematics were perfectly tuned for performance and offer the driver optimal neutral handling at the limit as well as better feedback and grip. The E63 AMG 4MATIC’s track on the front axle is 1.9 inches wider than the standard E-Class sedan and offers significantly better stability at high cornering speeds and better road feel. A more negative camber on both axles additionally improves lateral dynamics.

The perfect complement is the electromechanical AMG sports speed-sensitive steering. In conjunction with the variable power assist dependent on the selected suspension mode, the direct steering ratio of 14 : 1 provides particularly agile cornering capabilities. The 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC features high-sheen 10-spoke AMG alloys painted titanium gray as standard. The front axle features tires in size 255/35 R 19 (front) and 285/30 R 19 (rear) on AMG alloys in size 9.0 x 19 and 9.5 x 19. Only the powerful S-Model comes with 10- spoke alloys painted in matte titanium gray with high-sheen rim flanges.

AMG carbon ceramic high-performance braking system available as an option

As of course with all AMG cars, the 2014 E63 AMG 4MATIC also comes with an ultra-powerful AMG high-performance brake system. Vented and cross-drilled brake discs with a generous 14.2 in. diameter are fitted front and rear. Because of the special stresses they face, the front discs feature compound (two-piece) technology that has been tried and tested in motor racing. Brake calipers painted silver with white AMG lettering and six pistons (front) and four pistons (rear) provide responsive, fade-resistant deceleration and shortest stopping distances. The S-Model can be additionally identified by red brake calipers.

AMG carbon ceramic high-performance brakes are available as an option exclusively on the S-Model – recognizable thanks to even bigger brake discs with a diameter of 15.8 in. and the “AMG Carbon Ceramic” logo on the specially painted brake calipers. Their advantages: The discs are 40 percent lighter, reducing the unsprung masses and improving vehicle dynamics, agility and ride comfort. The ceramic discs are also much harder, resulting in an extended service life and in increased resistance to extreme loads and heat.

Unmistakable design with even more dynamic purpose and exclusivity

Dynamic purpose and performance are not only the focus of the fascinating technology of the new E63 AMG 4MATIC; the design also consistently transports these defining characteristics. Visually the AMG high-performance automobile sets new trends as the first AMG model to show off the new AMG design philosophy. Dominating elements are the silver-chrome AMG “twin blade” radiator grille and the so-called “A-wing.” The new three-dimensional air control element extends across the entire width of the AMG front fascia and sports the stylized “A” distinctive of AMG vehicles. The “A-wing” painted in body color with silver-chrome trim strip frames the three generously dimensioned cooling-air inlets. Black flics on the side air inlets ensure optimal airflow to the cooling modules; on the bottom a front splitter painted in body color contributes to increasing downforce. Convex and concave surfaces join the new, sculptured front end of the E63 AMG 4MATIC to the distinctive widened fenders, on which the “V8 BITURBO” lettering provides an indication of the superior engine power.

The side air outlets, the black mesh and the two chrome-plated dual tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emphasize the width of the vehicle in the rear. The black diffuser insert with pronounced fins lends the rear of the E63 AMG 4MATIC a strong touch of racetrack ambiance.

S-Model with even more striking design features

The 2014 E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC differs from the base model in numerous restyled and even more striking design features. The “A-wing” in the front has a black high-gloss finish; the front splitter and the striking three-dimensional inserts of the side skirts sport a silver-chrome design. The silver-chrome trim strip and the two unmistakable dual tailpipes of the AMG sport exhaust system provide a powerful effect in the rear. The AMG separation edge painted in body color (sedan only) reduces lift at high speeds.

The 10-spoke AMG alloys, painted matte titanium gray and featuring highsheen rim flanges, and the large tires in sizes 255/35 R 19 in front and 285/30 R 19 in the rear fill out the wheel wells perfectly. Red brake calipers and an AMG logo with contrasting black “S” on the trunk lid are further features of the S-Models.

Interior with dynamic-exclusive interior

The interior of the E63 AMG S-Model 4MATIC comes with – depending on customer preferences – gray contrasting seams on the AMG sports seats, the door center panels, the armrests of the doors and the center console. The interior also features silver-colored seat belts in conjunction with a black interior. The grip areas of the black Nappa leather steering wheel rim with flattened top and bottom is finished in Alcantara® with gray contrasting seams. The front head restraints of the AMG sports seats are embossed with AMG crests. The redesigned AMG instrument cluster carries an “S AMG” logo on the 200 mph speedometer with red needles. The standard equipment also includes AMG door sill panels backlit in white, power rear roller blinds (sedan only) in addition to many other details.

Distinctive to all E63 AMG 4MATIC models are highest quality materials, excellent workmanship and the exclusive ambiance. The new AMG-specific analog clock in IWC design between the two central ventilation outlets serves as an appealing focal point.

Highlights of standard equipment on all E63 AMG 4MATIC models also include:

AMG door sill panels

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround-sound system

A particular highlight in the selection of optional equipment for the E-Class Sedan and Wagon is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surroundsound system. Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG have created this high-end sound system together with renowned Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. The sound system is of course capable of Dolby Digital 5.1 playback and provides an exclusive music experience with unparalleled sound. The basis for this is not only the 1,200 watt amplifier and the 14 high-end speakers with neodymium drivers, but also the distribution of the music signals that is precisely controlled by the sound processor. This integrated digital sound processor (DSP) provides drivers with the option of selecting a special B&O sound menu on the COMAND system. In True Image™ mode individual sound settings for the front, center and rear can be selected. The effect: A realistic sound experience at the selected listening position. The “Sound Mode” menu also has various preset sound modes that allow choosing between a high-end “Reference” studio sound and a spacious surround sound. While “Reference” puts the focus on the sound presentation of the artist, the special surroundsound mode delivers a spacious surround-sound experience. In particular live recordings or concertos result in a unique panoramic sound in the vehicle without altering the naturalness of the recording.

50-watt illuminated tweeters with acoustic lens technology arranged in the mirror triangle add special highlights. High-end Bang & Olufsen aluminum speaker covers in silver chrome with Bang & Olufsen logo additionally signal the exceptional position of the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround-sound system.

Once again, the twin-turbo Ford GT, owned by our friend Mark and driven by our friend Sean, set the fastest MPH of the Texas Mile. On the first day of the event, Sean took Mark’s camo wrapped GT to an impressive 263.3 mph in the standing mile, breaking the Texas Mile record set by the duo at the March 2012 event.

2012 Jaguar XFR Review

Short of an exotic Italian sports car, or perhaps a pretty girl, few things have the ability to slow a valet from full sprint to retrieve a hotel guest’s Bentley Continental GT, but that is exactly what happened when we drove past in the 2012 Jaguar XFR.

We have driven prior year Jaguar XF’s and they never really garnered attention, but now, thanks to a well done redesign that includes sharper lines, sleek headlights, huge blacked out air inlets and black grille, the 2012 XFR is not going to arrive unnoticed. Its departure will not go unnoticed either, thanks to quad exhaust outlets that emit a rumble at low rpm and an outrageous roar as the tachometer climbs.

Bravarian Motor Works, with their M5, and Mercedes-Benz, with their E-class AMG, have been setting the high-water mark for luxury mid-size super sedans since early this Millennium. The Germans are not the only ones producing four door luxury rockets; the British have quietly been moving into the neighborhood and now with the introduction of the 2012 XFR, Jaguar has taken up residence on the same block as those German sedans.

Once behind the wheel of the XFR, we took a moment to appreciate the materials that surrounded us, like the perfectly bolstered leather seats, suede headliner, clean lines of the dash and quality switch gear, we were fairly certain that there was no place we would rather be. Upon pressing the start/stop button and seeing the shift knob rise from the center console, the air conditioning vents roll open and hearing the supercharged V8 growl to life, we were completely certain there was no place we would rather be.

The XFR is not a comfortable, sensible luxury sedan with the ability to go fast – it is a complete savage that can be tamed just enough to act like a comfortable, sensible luxury sedan. We were accused of being sensible only once, but that was by a stranger, so of course we had no intention of examining the sensible side of the XFR. So rather than calling upon the Jaguar to perform typical Jag duties, like early morning tee times and fancy dinners, we plugged in our radar detector and took a road trip.

Our destination was to be a set of roads nicknamed “The Twisted Sisters”, known to be some of the most exciting roads in Texas. The plan was to overnight in Austin, and early the next morning, see how the XFR could tackle The Sisters (they are roads Gloria Allred, roads – calm down). However, while in Austin, we received a message from a fellow car nut, recent Texas resident and one of the most hated guys in America, Jesse James. Jesse, who happens to live in the area, told us about a road that was closer to where we were and less traveled than The Twisted Sisters, so that is where we went instead.

Despite having a supercharged, 5-liter V8 that makes 510 horsepower, the 4,300 pound British cat can achieve 21 mpg on the highway. That relatively impressive number is possible thanks to a 6-speed automatic transmission that allows for low rpm cruising even at high speed. With 0-60 mph taking less than 4.5-seconds, merging onto the freeway or overtaking slower traffic requires little more than slightly adjusting the right foot. Adjust the right foot to the floor and the XFR will rocket 0-155 mph in about 30-seconds and eclipses the quarter mile in just 12.5-seconds.

Flat-out on open roads is fun, but it is when the roads begin to twist and bend and twist some more the XFR becomes very impressive. The Brits have fitted the XFR with their Adaptive Dynamic system, which monitors driver input along with chassis movement and continuously adjusts the suspension to ensure the XFR can maintain composure and maximize handling. The onboard computers make it relatively simple to drive around corners quickly, but for maximum enjoyment in the bends, follow these steps: Press down and turn the shift knob clockwise, press the button with the checkered flag symbol, press and hold the DSC button for 10-seconds and pull the left shift paddle back. Following that procedure puts the transmission in sport, true manual mode, turns dynamic driving mode on and turns off the fun killing but tire saving traction control.

Placing the transmission in sport, true manual does exactly like it sounds – the transmission will not shift until the driver gives it the okay by pulling either the upshift or downshift paddle mounted behind the steering wheel. Activating dynamic driving mode quickens throttle response, sharpens shifts, stiffens the suspension and makes several other desirable computer controlled changes. Disengaging traction control engages the driver’s inner 16-year old, turns every stop light into an opportunity to turn rubber into a lot of smoke and ensures you will be on a first name basis with the local tire shop.

On the desolate Jesse James recommended road, and others in the area, we pushed the XFR hard. It handled the constant elevation changes draped in unpredictable lefts and rights with ease. The Jaguar was flat around the corners; the steering was sharp and its ability to easily control power over steer slides made for a fun day with very few white-knuckle moments. After an extended period of spirited driving, the brakes showed no sign of fade; the 6-piston fronts and 4-piston rears, combined with vented rotors did their job with no fatigue.

Electronics in Jaguars have come a long way over the years, thankfully. Gone are the days of the horn turning on the windshield wipers and shorting out the headlight and door lock fuse. Our $85,500 tester came equipped with every available option, less the black wheels and red brake calipers, which meant we were treated to British luxuries including heated and cooled seats, touch screen navigation, radar cruise control, backup camera, parking sensors and a whole host of other gadgets. Despite the 2012 XFR being loaded with technology, and us hunting for any electrical oddity, there were none to be found. Our only complaint stemmed from the aggravatingly slow response time of the touch screen navigation/entertainment system, but that is nothing 510-horsepower cannot whitewash.

The G-wagon has always been a love it or hate it box on wheels. We have always loved it and are sure that a 544 horsepower, 560 pound-feet of torque, 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine stuffed in the box will sway a few to the love it side.

For those still focused on its shipping container looks, perhaps the G65 version with 612 horsepower, 737 pound-feet of torque, being produced by a twin-turbo 6.0 liter V12, will help you see it our way. Supercar numbers, like those, have a way of improving the looks of almost anything.

New technology for the AMG off-road icon: the new 2013 G63 AMG impresses with a state-of-the-art powertrain, expressive new design and improved efficiency. All this is largely attributable to the AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine delivering 544 hp and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission. The 2013 G63 AMG makes its U.S. showroom debut in August.

Every new AMG high-performance vehicle offers an outstanding mix of “more power from less fuel” – and the G63 AMG is no exception. The “strong man” in the AMG model range has been further enhanced with the state-of-the-art powertrain of the new ML63 AMG. The design has been comprehensively refreshed, so that, for the first time in the 33-year history of the G-Class, AMG customers can enjoy some of the latest cutting-edge systems: spray-controlled gasoline direct injection, the ECO stop/start function and alternator management. The AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine develops a maximum output of 544 hp and a torque of 560 lb-ft. This enables the 2013 G63 AMG to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph (electronically limited).

The new G63 AMG outperforms it’s predecessor, the G55 AMG KOMPRESSOR, by 44 hp and 44 lb-ft of torque, and was a clear favorite for G-Class purchasers, making-up 40 percent of sales globally. Key figures for the G63 AMG at a glance:

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic and ECO stop/start function

The vehicle’s driving performance features are matched by its impressive advances in the area of fuel economy. The fuel consumption has been reduced by 13 percent (European cycle) thanks to the state-of-the-art biturbo eightcylinder engine, along with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission, the alternator management system and the ECO stop/start function. The seven-speed automatic gearbox features three drive modes and an automatic rev-matching function for downshifting, creating an incredible range of versatility. In “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode, the ECO stop/start function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stationary. “C” mode is also characterized by smooth accelerator and transmission characteristics and early gear changes; the vehicle is usually started in second gear in this mode. The AMG instrument cluster includes a green “ECO” symbol, indicating when the ECO stop/start function is on.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) modes, the ECO stop/start function is off, and the engine and transmission behave more aggressively. Short, precisely defined ignition and injection retardations mean shorter shift times under full load. The efficiency of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission system is further enhanced with a new torque converter with centrifugal pendulum, friction-reducing bearing and transmission oil thermal management.

The allure of the characteristic sound of a V8 AMG

Despite fuel efficiency improvements, there’s been no sacrifice in emotional appeal. The twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emit the hallmark AMG eight-cylinder sound that’s central to this vehicle’s appeal. The latest catalytic converter technology is used to ensure that the G63 AMG meets both the EU 5 exhaust emissions standard and the requirements for the US market (LEV-II standard, on-board diagnosis II and lambda probe diagnosis).

New chassis settings, optimized acoustic comfort

The suspension/damper settings in the AMG Sports chassis have been adjusted for the more dynamic handling characteristics of the new model. To reduce vibration and noise, the design engineers at Mercedes-AMG also implemented a wide range of measures including optimized bearings for the automatic gearbox, transfer case and engine cut vibration and noise levels. All this ensures a more comfortable ride and helps to keep the driver fit and alert, particularly over long distances.

The wheels and brakes are also completely new. The 2013 G63 AMG runs on new AMG split 5-spoke light alloy wheels as standard equipment. The 9.5 x 20 titanium-grey-painted wheels with high-sheen finish are fitted with 275/50 R 20 tires. The new AMG high-performance brakes deliver top performance in terms of deceleration and endurance. Ventilated all-around, perforated brake discs with dimensions of 14.8 x 1.42 inches at the front and 13 x 0.79 inches at the rear provide optimum thermal capability and outstanding deceleration. The front axle is fitted with a six-piston fixed-caliper brake system taken from the ML 63 AMG, with a single-piston floating-caliper system on the rear axle. Standard red painted calipers are a special highlight of the G63 AMG.

Fully readjusted ESP® for with more comfort functions

The 2013 G-Class also offers a range of exemplary safety features. For example, the luxury off-roader has an updated version of ESP®, with automatic control systems including the start-up assist and a HOLD function, both for easier hill starts. And in an emergency braking situation, when the driver suddenly releases the accelerator, the brake system “pre-charges” the pressure in the brake lines which ensures maximum effect as soon as the brake is applied.

Characteristic AMG styling with the new face of the brand

The exterior of the eight-cylinder top-of-the-range model has also been refreshed. Following the example of the SL63 AMG and SL65 AMG, the G63 AMG has also taken on the new face of the AMG brand. The high-gloss black “twin-blade” radiator grille with four chrome inserts makes the new G-Class model instantly recognizable as an AMG. The grille design is consistent with the car’s classic contours, with an off-road look perfectly integrated into the vehicle’s overall appearance.

Another completely new feature is the AMG bumper, with three generously dimensioned openings as airflow inlets. Vertical high-gloss chrome stainless steel inserts create a distinctively masculine look for the G63 AMG. New LED daytime running lamps are fitted below the bi-xenon headlamps. The AMG model also has characteristic fender flares, stainless-steel running boards and side protective strips with stainless-steel inserts. Other distinctive features include the “V8 BITURBO” logo on the front fender and a standard brush guard on U.S. models.

Stylish new-look interior with increased comfort

The interior features even more innovations in comparison including the new instrument panel and state-of-the-art infotainment and assist systems, the G63 AMG has an AMG instrument cluster with color TFT screen, AMG main menu and separate gear display, plus white-lit AMG sills on all doors. The elegant ESELECT shift lever with the distinctive AMG medallion is a familiar feature from other models such as the SLS AMG. An exclusive interior is created by the designo leather upholstery with fluted leather door paneling. Options available for an even more stylish interior include trim in AMG carbon, designo Champagne white lacquer or designo light brown satin poplar.
